DC Trip report

I was in DC last week for the National Guard Public Affairs  conference. In addition to learning a lot I met some amazing people. I met the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, a really dynamic guy. He basically said to break out and do the cool stuff you think needs doing (in PA) and get forgiveness later.  "Here's my card, call me if you get in trouble." A get -out-of-jail-free card, how cool is that?
I think there's a life message there too, stop worrying about what others think and go live your life.

I also met the Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs the VA, Tammy Duckworth.  You've heard of her:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammy_Duckworth

She's the helicopter pilot who lost her legs to an RPG and ran for congress. An amazing lady. I'll be posting a pic with her as soon as I get it.

There were a lot of other high ups, it was hosted by the National Guard Bureau PAO, he's a cool guy and really outgoing, which seems to be a trait for PA folks.
Met some really good people from AZ. One sergeant, Ed, was a former Naval officer and got out and came the NG as an enlisted man. He's from Brooklyn and I love that accent.

I was out with some of these new friends at a crazy hour very early Thur. morning, driving around the Mall area in DC, just looking around. I got off on a kind of side street, by the Daughters of the American Revolution building and stopped at a stop sign with the window down. I heard a Blackhawk on the other side of some trees about 500 yds away. I know a Blackhawk's sound and thought, "there's only one Blackhawk that should be in this area." Yep, Marine One (the president's bird). It lifted off and flew in front of the Washington monument. It was pretty powerful moment. I found out later the bird was heading back to Andrews after returning the President to the White House after meeting the bodies of the 18 troops killed in Afghanistan last week.   It was one of the moments that only happen rarely in ones life.

Friday we were supposed fly out at 0945 (ish) to Chicago and then OKC. The fight to OKC was cancelled due to winds and the next best flight was at 653PM. I was pretty annoyed, especially since our bird was a Boeing 777. But the lady at the counter suggested I go to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, it was close and there's a regular shuttle. Well that sounded ok, I'd think about it.
I was wandering around the airport (the Ethiopian Air counter area was interesting) and stumbled to the USO. Cool, this is a positive step. The ladies there gave me free shuttle tokens, I read the paper and found out where the President had been, and caught a nap. When it was time for the first shuttle to go I stashed my laptop and headed out.  When I walked  into the museum I was amazed. What a fantastic collection and facility. I'll have to make a separate post on all the stuff I saw. But the highlights include a book author signing his book, which I bought, the shuttle Enterprise, Wiley Post's plane the Winnie Mae, an SR 71 (kicked the tires on an operational one before so it was a bit ho hum to me) the Enola Gay, and an amazing collection for WWII American, German and Japanese planes.
So I spent the day just photographing everything in sight. I found a book of photo artwork of the planes in the gift shop and bought that. It's full of the kind of stuff I love to do but didn't have time and access to do.
So it turned out to be serendipitous to be delayed, who knows when I'd ever gotten to see  that stuff other wise.
I'll be posting photos as I get to them.
It was a great week.

Depressed

My favorite restaurant/pub and bar, Gallileo's and Isis, are closing. I feel like I've lost a friend, the Paseo won't be the same, even if a new cool place goes in, it won't be the same.  I'm hoping there's a silver lining in it for the owners. I think Tina's relived.  I'm sure they'll land on their feet but I worry what Tina will do for support long term.  A moment of silence please.....

Quotes apps

Scroll down to my new quotes gagets, Darth Vader and Mr. Spock. There are none cooler in scifi (well, ok, Chriton from Farscape maybe).

Getting on the ball

I've created a Facebook page just for my photography. Check the tab on the right.

Ok, for some reason that sends you to my personal page, not the photo page. Damn! Got to figure that one out. I'll have to ask deShan if hers does that too.

Been slack

yeah, sorry, been keeping up with a friend that had a brain tumor removed this week. Need to get over to Studio 164 (Matty's) and swap out the art I have there.
Try to be better about posting from now on.

Show on the news

http://www.news9.com/global/story.asp?s=10334988

Ch 9 did a really nice job, except I hope no one things the comment about the boot photo isn't about a US vehicle. It was an Iraqi T72.
Good turn out, thanks to Larry for his support. Too bad I can't leave the show up.

Cool web site

Looks like fun

A View of the War, Looking for Beauty in Chaos.

Finally got to set down with Larry and we picked the images for the show, also stumbled across the artist's statement, which is cool.
Got the last of the prints back yesterday, there's some awesome stuff.
Of course nothing is ever easy, had to reschedule the show from the 2nd to the 9th of May.
But I'm excited.

Hmmm

Haven't been very good about keeping up with events, got lots of good feedback from my show but no buys (yet).  Working on the Iraq show for Larry Pickering's trailer show next month, well, at least I NEED to be working on that.

Photo show opening rescheduled

Since the opening was shot down by the weather last night we are rescheduling it for next Mon, 2 Feb. Hopefully I can reach everyone, what with all my contacts being lost from my phone.

No good deed

While helping pull people up an icy hill today, I managed to loose my cel and house keys.  At least I was able to get an identical fone from Mom but all my content is gone. I was SUPPOSED to be backed up on Sprint.com but I think because it got screwed up while in Iraq it's gone. The contacts wouldn't have been backed up anyway.
On the bright side I was interviewed by KWTV ch 9 so that's cool. There should be video on their web site later.

Yep, weather was too much

I don't blame anyone for not coming last night, it was the worst driving surface I've seen in years, even my sure-footed Dodge was having trouble.  It looks like we will reschedule for next Monday.
deShan suggested another night so we'll see.

Fishies

Since my aquarium was so corroded with lime and minerals I got a new, bigger one, with a much nicer cabinet.  So far I've got some clown loaches, tetras, some sort of dwarf gouramis, a female beta, a rainbow shark, and a couple of bumblebee cats.
Yea me!

Oh great, the weather (and other irritants)

The TV is saying we're going to get an ice storm tomorrow, super. I'll be surprised if anyone comes to the opening now.
I also noticed two of my color sky series have scratches so I'm going to have to replace them. I've already got an extra purple (Bruised Sky) but the I'm having a hard time getting the blue one (Somber Sky). I had hell trying to upload it to Epperson's web site, so I went by there, couldn't remember the size so I went home to get the spare but when I got back (at 1734) I saw they closed at 1700!  AARGH! I finally got the photos uploaded, hopefully they get them done (then again it may not matter with the weather).

Getting back at it.

I'm following deShan's lead and getting into this blog thing to promote my work.  She's been a tremendous influence on me in so many ways. I started a blog on MySpace while I was in Iraq, partly for myself and partly for friends and family at home. That was pretty easy because there was always something new and interesting about which to talk.  This may prove more challenging. I hope I can keep this interesting.

The main thing right now is getting my work and my name back out in circulation.  I taking some of the lessons I learned from my show at Gallileo's and some from de  and I'm doing more to promote my new show.  Which I should probably mention at this point, is at the Will Rogers Theater at NW 43rd and Western. The opening is Mon Jan 26 from 5-7.  I've gotten some very positive feedback, I can't wait to hear from some of the other artists here in town when they see it.
